Holster for EDC

Post by Imaginos » Sat Jun 30, 2018 12:39 am

I have been searching for a holster auto use for EDC for about a month (only recently got my permit). I’m a righty, but have the wonderful issue of both rotator cuffs having tears. What this means to me is I cannot carry small of back. I can draw from 4 o clock better than 3 o clock (if 3 is a straight vertical draw). But 4 o clock about pushes my reach. Also, 4 o clock is a bear to get a holster on with because of mobility issues reaching and clipping, much less reholstering.

So I’ve about decided that my options are either a cross draw on the front or appendix carry. Mobility of shoulder is fine to cross draw. But that seems to be frowned upon in general, so I’m leaning toward appendix carry. I have a hybrid kydex/leather that works, but I don’t always wear a belt. Sometimes it is gym shorts. So to that reason, I spent the $88 for a 3 speed holster. If you aren’t familiar, it is a belly band style holster. It just arrived in the mail 2 days ago. It is far morecomfortable than I expected. An added plus is that with the similarity of Caniks, I can put either my Elite or DA in it. Could also do SA and probably even SFX, but have tried that one yet.

Right now I’m wavering between DA and Elite-S for EDC. The smaller grip on the Elite is better for printing, but even the DA doesn’t print bad with this thing. About to go on a road trip, so we’ll see how this goes after driving a few hours. It is more comfortable to sit with than the kydex/leather set up.

Thx for the report on the new holster. Seen several ads here & there for them. I'm a belt kind of guy so I'm not so sure how I'd like the 3-speed.

After you wear it for a while please give as an after action report.

What part of the country are you in? I never messed with belly band type holsters before since I usually have a belt on, and if I do go out in gym shorts its usually summer and I pocket carry always figured belly band would get too hot and sweaty when its 100 degrees and 100% humidity.

I’m in middle Tennessee where we’ve been having temps in the 90s this week and heat index over 100. I wore it out today and actually got it into 4 o clock by just spinning it after it was fastened. Worked well carrying and not printing. It was pretty comfortable but with my shirt on and seat belt buckled, there would be no drawing without some work. That’s more a function of shirt + seat belt though.

This was carrying the DA plus extra magazine.

Thanks for the info. I've been considering one for summer carry. I'm not a big fan of belts, but do wear one when needed. I'm in Iowa and am probably experiencing the same or near same temps as you. I usually carry a smaller pistol in the summer, but may give my DA a chance with a belly band holster. Keep us posted how this holster works out for you.

Nice, think it would get to sweaty here in Houston for it though. My current main carry rigs are Clinger v4 IWB(cz p09) or desantis nemesis pocket holster or tulster aiwb both g42 w/ tlr6.

Clinger i wear at 4, could be comfortably worn in other positions but i find it conceals best there, something with shorter grip i could move around. Tulster with 42 I either aiwb or 3 o'clock, but could easily be worn anywhere an conceal fine with the 42 in it.

Just following up on this. I’ve tried a few other holsters just for comparisons. Latest one I’ve tried is a Bare Arms Hybrid. Overall, I really appreciate the size of the backing on the 3 speed. I’ve got some extra weight on me as shown in the photos. The 3 speed is doing a good job of displacing and smoothing thatwhich makes it far more comfortable. The smaller backing at the top on the other holsters leaves a level of discomfort when wearing them.

Current status - the 3 speed is the most comfortable still yet.

Current con - if I’m wearing a belt with the 3 speed, it is harder to reholster the firearm than any of the kydex. This is common sense, but I just wanted to mention it in fairness.

Good to know, I’ll look into that brand as I have yet to find a holster for my DA.

Quick update - I find myself now wearin* the ultimate hybrid from Bare Arms holsters the most. To the point that I just ordered 2 extra shells for my other possible carry guns.

I've got an original Alien Gear with the leather backer. I'll break it out if I NEED to wear my shirt tucked. It mostly sits in the drawer because it doesn't work for Aiwb and the sweat guard folds over, covering the opening of the holster. I never had a problem with retention, but the hybrid system does lack the positive "click" of a full kydex holster.

Bare Arms and Stealthgear have the open mesh backers. How positive is the click on holstering? How rigid it's the sweat guard on the Bare Arms hybrid?
