What ammo are you running in USPSA?

Post by ImMobyYouDick » Thu Aug 30, 2018 12:18 am

Hey guys, just diving into USPSA this past summer and had a ton of fun. I ended up getting really good results with the new federal syntech stuff, and it cycles my SFx like a dream. Any one else using factory loads have any other good stuff to try?

I personally haven't shot USPSA yet, but several people here have. I'm sure @Weapon, @wildbilloh or someone else will be along shortly with some info.

For 9mm, I'd recommend just running what is affordable and reliable in your gun. Quite a few guys around here shoot the same ammo. I don't think the price increase to shoot ammo made specifically for competition is worth it in 9mm.

Now, if you were to ever start reloading, and it cost about the same to start shooting 147 gr bullets as it does 115, that is when specialty ammo starts to make sense.

Carry optics: 135gr Blue Bullet over Titegroup loaded slightly long. It is about 129-130 power factor.
Limited: 180gr Blue Bullet over Titegroup loaded quite long by typical .40 standards (double stack limited pistols tend to do better with slightly longer loads) for about 170 power factor.
Brass for either is whatever I have on hand to reload (usually not a problem as I have quite a bit of 9mm and .40 brass saved up.
Primers are typically S&B or Winchester

Out of an SFx, even Blazer Brass will make minor with some room to spare.

I've tried just about all the bullet weights. FMJ's and painted. 145 Painted ACME'S have evolved into the go to bullet. Nothing but range brass BUT I use the Lee 9mm "U" die. I'm using N320 because I have some (Tite Group is fine). Cronoed & 133PF x 3.2 grns. N320 x 1.135 OAL <use at your own risk>, Win or Fed primers. I'm using a Dillon 650 with a MR. Bullet feeder (Well worth the $$$$).

Although I don't shoot competition, the Syntech 124's and Speer Lawman 124's have been the most accurate out of my SFX and 100% reliable. (I haven't bench rested groups for an exact analysis, but from supported rests, they group pretty well).

Just finished two bug matches (Minnesota and Iowa State sectional matches) and the 150 syntech was amazing. Highly recommended!
